Renal Function Test
Renal function test is done for those who are diagnosed with kidney disease and those who suspect that they have kidney problems. What does a renal function test include and what are the normal values for those test results? The following is going to give you some figures as a reference.
Check items are:
- Blood Urea Nitrogen(BUN)
- Serum Creatinine(Scr)
- Blood Urea
- Blood Uric Acid(BUA/UA)
- Urine Creatinine(UCr)
- Urine Protein
- Selective Proteinuria Index(SPI)
- β2-Microglobulin Clearance Test
- Urea Excretion Ratio
- Creatinine Clearance Rate(CcR)
- Phenol Red Excretion Test(PSP)
As noted above, the main check items of renal function test are listed, among which creatinine and blood urea nitrogen are the most important since they indicate that there has been something wrong with your kidneys if the values are high. According to different check methods in different hospitals, the values may exist slight difference, the normal values we usually use are:
Serum Creatinine:
Adult Women: 0.5 to 1.1 mg/dL
Adult Men: 0.6 to 1.2 mg/dL
Individuals With Only One Kidney: 1.8 to 1.9 mg/dL
Blood Urea Nitrogen :
Normal BUN for adults is 12 to 20.
BUN in children and infants is 5 to 18.
BUN in newborns is 3 to 12.
Blood urea nitrogen is 21 to 40 for cold blood.
In the elderly, the blood urea nitrogen is a little higher than normal adult range.
When these two values excess the normal criteria, immediate treatment is necessary in case of the worsening of the disease.
